Epson L850 Review
Epson L850 is a printer device with an ink tank system that is specifically made for printing photos. However, this printer does not have network capabilities and is not very fast in printing. But it’s different to print high-quality and cost-effective photos with other inkjet printers.
The Epson L850 takes the best design aspects of both the L810 and L550. It has a tank on the right; The feeder tray retracts behind the scanner and the control panel in the front. It is slightly wider than the A4 laser printer but smaller in height. The tank takes up some extra space on the right. And they are a bit loose for a printer, so you need to be careful when moving the printer.

The control panel that seemed to be floating in front, an old concept, is now reformed with a bigger, colorful screen showing icons and text. It doesn’t have a touchscreen but has a dozen “touch” buttons scattered around to operate the printer. The buttons are quite spacious, easily visible through the contrasting black and white colors, and quite responsive, making them quite pleasant to use. But they are not backlit if you plan to use them in a dark room.
The manual is pretty self-explanatory in explaining how you need to get a bottle ready to pour ink into the tank. Once done, you can plug it into a wall outlet and turn it from the Off position to the ON position. After the initial check, the printer will be ready to print.
Unfortunately, there is no wireless facility on the printer, so the settings are limited to installing the driver on your computer and connecting the printer to its USB port. The same port is present under the scanner assembly to put the wire around the left edge and out of the left corner. This printer only takes about 12W in a working model, only a fraction of what a laser printer needs (over 350W) when working.
Armed with an intuitive interface and multiple ports on the front, the Epson L850 can function without a computer because this Printer has a USB port, SD, and Memory Stick Pro card slots, which supports mini SD cards, MagicGate Memory Stick, and other types of memory. But the printing mode is not supported by the features in handling image files that are more or less like in a computer.
Once the memory card is connected to the printer, it will count the number of photos present and return to the previous working screen. From the Home menu, select the ‘print photos’ option will show several options for viewing/printing all photos, specifying the page layout (on page half, 2 on the page, 4 on the page, etc.).
You can define print settings for quality, page size, borderless printing, or automatically enhance photos from photos adjusted in the menu in the built-in menu. More advanced options (advanced mode) allow you to correct red-eye, apply B&W/Sepia filters, and change the photo’s contrast, saturation, and sharpness. Among the file handling features, there is a Data Backup option capable of transferring all memory card images to a pen drive or USB flash disk.
Scan and copy
This printer has a Letter size flatbed scanner capable of scanning documents at 1,200 dots per inch directly to a PC or memory card/pen drive. It goes without saying that 1200dpi resolution is such a scan of the ceiling that even small office printers rarely touch. A photo that comes out at either 300 or 600 dpi max, so it’s not usually needed. Unless you need to be subtle in editing it in photoshop, the Epson L850 can also scan documents in jpeg or PDF.
This printer has a copy setting that can also be adjusted to print photos. In the basic menu, contrast, several copies, and B&W/Color options can be made. Further, in the settings menu, restoring/setting colors on old photos or copying the CD cover to a CD with full instructions from the photo / CD features in the scanner holder to placing the disc into the printer.
